How To Worship More
The act of worship is not a specific checklist that needs to be done. Along with singing, dancing, and going to Church, there are numerous ways to give glory to our Savior Jesus. This list is just a general guideline to help you understand how much of your heart needs to be in worship. When you come to God with a genuine desire to know Him and be in His presence, you’re already opening yourself up to a great worship moment! Singing, praising, praying, serving, and listening are all ways we give reverence to our Creator. So, see if you can relate to these scripture-based ideas…and maybe come up with more!
1. Set a Time. Ecclesiastes 3:4
It doesn’t matter how long you worship, what matters is that you worship. A good way of doing this is by setting up a time for worship where you can’t get distracted—no phone, no family, no job—just you and God. Now of course, things happen where you can’t have a moment to yourself. So maybe right before bed you say a prayer covering your day and listening for God’s voice. That’s enough! Try a small routine that you can do, and you will see that even in the smallest moments, God performs His biggest miracles.
2. Be Honest. Psalm 139:1-5
God already knows what’s going on with you. He knows what you’re thinking, and how you’re feeling. But sometimes, being honest with yourself helps you to realize how much help you need, or how strong you are with Him. And sometimes speaking out about our honesty brings revelation, blessing, and peace. Being honest is a way that we show vulnerability, and that is something that leads us closer to God in a quiet type of worship.
3. Take Care of Yourself. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
When someone gives you a gift, do you throw it to the floor where it can be hidden? Or do you prop it up and keep it looking good? Taking a mental break, eating healthy, exercise, cleaning the house, going to a doctor’s appointment—these are all things that show God that we are not only grateful to be created by Him, but grateful for the things He’s given us. And gratefulness is beautiful way to worship Him, by taking care of ourselves and gifts from our Lord.
4. Be Forgiving. Ephesians 4:32; Matthew 6:14-15,12:50
This might be a tough one for some people to do. But think about it: forgiveness is the basically what happened to us when Jesus died on the cross and took our place for our sins. Forgiveness is a way of telling someone that they don’t have to worry about past incidents, and that they are free to be themselves in a new way. Forgiving others helps us to let go our own hurt and focus on more joy, peace, and grace. That is the ultimate gift God gave us, and if we do the same to others, we are showing God that we want what He wants, and wanting God’s will is definitely an act of worship!
5. Serve. Matthew 20:28; John 13:5-17
Our purpose as children of God is to love God and love others as we love ourselves. There is no better way to show love than doing for others and helping in hard times. Being a listening ear, helping run errands, giving money to people who ask, serving in a food bank, and encouraging one another are all ways we worship. By serving others, and putting ourselves last, we reflect Jesus’ sacrificial love for us.
Worship is doing everything that brings glory and praise to God. We sing, we dance, we play instruments, we teach, we give, we pray, and we believe. As long as Jesus is at the center, we are set to worship however we can, whenever we can. And when we worship, we allow God to work within us and around us. When we worship, we can allow ourselves to be free in the presence of God and everywhere else. When we worship, we tell God that we are grateful for who He is, for what He has done, and how He has created us for His glory. Worship is present whenever we give ourselves to God and His will. So sing your favorite song, pray your specific prayer, and trust that God sees our worship always…even when we don’t feel like we are.
Worship happens when we decide that God is deserving of all our attention.
