Matthew 6:19-34

The reason Jesus tells us to “not worry about earthly things” (Matthew 6:25), is because those things are temporary and not eternal. That’s why we’re called to lay up treasures in heaven, where things are eternal (v. 20). By focusing on worldly things like money, wealth, and treasures, we eventually make those things our idols, taking place of God. We are sometimes so caught up in what we don’t have, or what we want more of, that we forget the true purpose of living on earth! The true purpose is not to collect the most money, or have the most romantic partners, or even to have the biggest house. Our purpose on this earth is to love and show compassion to everyone, and to serve selflessly. We can’t do that when we’re focused on the next outfit trend, or next consumption toy/product. When we make our treasures for heaven (living a life honoring to God, reflecting the Fruit of the Spirit), we are ensuring that our heart is focused on God (v. 21).

Jesus goes on to explain that whatever we consume and surround ourselves with, is what we will eventually become. He says in verse 22-23: “The light of the body is the eye: therefore if your eye is good, your body will be full of light. But if your eye is evil, then your whole self will be full of darkness….!” (v. 22-23). Our eyes are windows to our souls; they allow us to experience the amass creation that God has given us. When we surround ourselves with love and helping others and being grateful to God, we start to see things differently. We start to see how we are deeply loved by others, and how others have helped us, and how God is still making a way out of no way. When we set our eyes on God, and things above (Colossians 3:2), we are setting our hearts in heaven…we are setting our treasures up in heaven!

So, the next time you’re worrying about your next paycheck, or meal, or Amazon package, remember that God knows what you need always. He’s prepared for it! He will provide for you regardless of whether you’re a Believer or not. He will bring you your needs and allow you to flourish. And when we truly repent and become followers of Jesus, we unlock even greater blessings…better than we could ever imagine!

Set up treasures in heaven, because doing so shows God that you are trusting Him to provide for everything!
