A Woman Anointing

Luke 7:37-50
In the Gospels we meet a woman named Mary who visits Jesus. She anoints Jesus’ head and also washes his feet with her tears. When confronted by the disciples, Jesus explains that the woman is preparing him for burial. He then forgives Mary for all her sins. Afterwards, Jesus dies on the cross but is raised up again on the third day.
In the book of James (5:14-15) there are instructions for the elders of the church to anoint the sick in the name of the Lord. Then, there is a promise that with their prayer of faith, the sick will be saved, and the Lord shall raise him up, as well as forgive his sins.
Aside from healing the soldier’s ear, Matthew, Mark, and John mention no more miracles after being anointed until Jesus is raised from the dead. The anointing by Mary for Jesus did in fact prepare Him for His burial, but it also fulfilled the future promise by James. The verse promises to save the sick, raise them up, and forgive their sins. And this anointing oil did just that. It symbolizes Jesus rising from the dead (but didn’t cause it; that power He already had!). Also, saving the sick and forgiveness of sins is promised to us today, at this very moment. Mary’s preparation for Jesus was a crucial moment in the life of Jesus— because her prayer of faith and actions allowed for the three promises from God: Salvation, Restoration, and Forgiveness.
In this beautiful New Year, remember that there is an anointing on you made thousands of years ago—by a woman whom no one expected anything. You are blessed with the promises of God through the holy oil. And because of Jesus’ sacrifice, you can experience those promises right now and for all eternity.
Happy New Year!
