I had been in Isaiah just reading through, when I found this scripture in chapter 50:11: “Behold, all ye that kindle a fire, that compass yourselves about with sparks: walk in the light of your fire, and in the sparks that ye have kindled. This shall ye have of mine; ye shall lie down in sorrow.” This was a warning to those people who practiced hurtful sayings and evil attacks on others. But the verse before calls on the people of God. Verse 10 says “Who is among you that feareth the Lord that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? Let him trust in the name of the Lord, and stay upon his God.” This verse calls us followers of Christ to continue to follow in Him, because in Him we have light. And once we have His light, we can be challenged to keep our fire burning, instead of our enemies.
When Moses and the Israelites were building and maintaining the tabernacle, they were instructed to light a candlestick, or menorah, for an eternal light (Exodus 27:20; Leviticus 6:12-13). I believe these verses help us understand what it truly means to let our light shine. Exodus requires oil for the light, so that it will continue to burn. The parable of the Ten Virgins (Matthew 25:4) shows us that wise people always prepare themselves to keep their lights burning. Matthew 5:16 tells us to let our light shine, so that others may see who we are in Christ. As long as we are in the presence of God, like the priests were, we should always have our light burning.
We do not keep our fire for destruction of others. We keep it to reflect the light of Christ—and the love that God has for us—to others.
Let your light shine for good, not evil.
Matthew 5:14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid.”
